Elbehafen LNG – Marine Service GmbH confirmed as project partner

20.01.2023

To strengthen an independent energy supply in Germany, Brunsbüttel will receive a floating LNG import terminal, a so-called FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit), chartered by RWE on behalf and in the name of the German government. This FSRU can be used to import additional gas for Germany’s energy supply. In a single discharge operation, the 300-meter-long ship is capable of receiving up to 170,000 cubic meters of LNG from tankers, regasifying the LNG on board and then feeding it into the German gas grid.

The operator of this floating LNG import terminal is Elbehafen LNG GmbH, which was established as a project joint venture company. Marine Service GmbH is proud to be a partner in this joint venture.

Marine Service GmbH supports the project with technical know-how for, among others

– the necessary upgrading of the pier

– the required adjustments to the FSRU

– the LPG transfer

– technical and nautical measures for the interim solution until the new jetty is commissioned.

The FSRU will now start its operations in Brunsbüttel Elbehafen, which is owned and operated by Brunsbüttel Ports GmbH.

Approval in Principle for containerized LNG solution developed by
Marine Service GmbH and Newport Shipping

10.03.22

Marine Service GmbH and Newport Shipping are proud to announce an Approval in Principle from Bureau Veritas (BV) for a jointly developed containerized LNG solution.

The 40′ ISO LNG Fuel Tank Container System is suitable for LNG-fuelled newbuildings and retrofits of container vessels.

The LNG fuel tank container is a class approved Type C LNG fuel tank in accordance with the IGF-code and is based on German TÜV certified IMDG Container. The capacity of the tank is 31 gross tonnes and about 33m3 of LNG. The containers have a fail-safe dry quick coupling connection and are approved for loading in up to 7 layers high stacks. The stainless-steel double-walled tank is also vacuum insulated and has up to 80 days holding time.

The concept consists of container stowage on free deck in safe area. LNG piping and venting system as well as firefighting systems are integrated in the container cell guides structure. The gas handling room is arranged adjacent to the container storage and separated from the containers by a cofferdam and fire protection means, allowing to feed low pressure and high pressure fuel gas systems for all known 4-stroke and 2-stroke dual fuel engines. A full redundant control, alarm & monitoring system for remote system operation, gas and fire alarm with interface to ships’ automation is part of the system.

Since LNG containers are portable, the total number of containers can be easily optimised according to the owners’ requirements. Simple and easy to install on board, when a ship is in port, the empty containers can be taken out and replaced by new filled ones.

Ingmar Loges, Managing Director, Newport Shipping says: “The global shipping industry faces unprecedented challenges as environmental regulations tighten. The shipping industry needs alternatives. The containerized LNG concept provides an answer to these challenges.”

Marine Service GmbH develops several LNG fuel solutions including tank containers. The containers are an alternative solution to traditional LNG bunkering.

Newport Shipping offers its customers full retrofit services for Marine Service GmbH’s LNG fuel tank container solutions at its 15 yards that it works in cooperation with. With flexible financing options and a quick delivery of turnkey LNG retrofit options the company expects that this will present itself an attractive option for clients in the near future.

“We are glad to have reached an Approval in Principle from BV for our containerized LNG as fuel solution. LNG is one of the most promising alternative fuels by now.”, says Christian Krämer, Chairman of Marine Service GmbH.

DESPITE CORONA: LNG Fuel Gas Supply System for Mardi Gras successfully installed

18.12.2020

The Hamburg-based company Marine Service GmbH has successfully installed the LNG Fuel Gas Supply System on the “Mardi Gras”. Carnival Cruise Line’s largest ship to date (5,200 passengers) will be the first US cruise ship to be powered entirely by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and will be used primarily in the Caribbean.

LNG is currently the most environmentally friendly ship fuel with the lowest emission values.

Marine Service GmbH was commissioned with the design and delivery of the gas supply system. The main components of the gas system supplied by Marine Service GmbH are LNG pumps, gas compressors, vaporisers, cryogenic valves and superheaters, as well as the glycol water modules that use the waste heat from the main engines and feed it to the vaporisers and superheaters to prepare the fuel. In addition, all electrical components including the pneumatic interfaces and the PLC-controlled automation system are part of the Marine Service GmbH scope of supply. The system is designed in such a way that in the event of a component failure, the redundancy is so high that gas operation is still possible and safe. Marine Service GmbH prepared the operating instructions and provided training for the ship’s crew and the shipyard employees who operated the LNG system during commissioning and testing.

Marine Service GmbH awarded „Partner of the year“ by MEYER Group

13.05.2019

Marine Service GmbH has been awarded „Partner of the Year“ by MEYER Group for outstanding performance, competence and commitment for the year 2018.

Christian Krämer, Chairman of Marine Service GmbH, received the award during the annual “Partner of the Year” gala in Papenburg, Germany, on 9 May 2019.

Every year Meyer Werft invites about 200 out of its about 6,500 total suppliers to the award gala and rewards its very best suppliers with the Partner of the Year award on the basis of a rating system based on the suppliers’ performance in terms of price, reliability and quality per ship and most importantly on the suppliers’ overall annual performance.

„We feel very honored to receive this award” Krämer declares. “And I am extremely proud of the outstanding result my team has achieved in supporting MEYER Group in the field of LNG. We are looking forward to continuing this excellent relationship with MEYER Group.”

In December 2018, Marine Service GmbH successfully delivered the LNG fuel gas system for the “AIDAnova” which was built at Meyer Werft in Papenburg for the cruise operator AIDA Cruises of Carnival Corporation. The “AIDAnova” is the world’s first cruise vessel operating both at sea and in port on liquefied natural gas (LNG), the most environmentally friendly and lowest-emission fossil fuel available today.

As one of the major technology leaders in the introduction of LNG as a fuel for the marine industry, Marine Service is a comprehensive supplier of highly complex LNG fuel systems and maintains its own LNG technology development and research test facility.
